Project Description
This project reduced the rate of shoreline erosion and loss of the existing beach ridge and to protect the fresh to intermediate marshes of the McFaddin NWR from the increasing frequency of salt water inundation, potentially contaminated with oil and tar balls, from the Gulf of Mexico. The project will be accomplished by restoring beach ridge elevations along approximately 11 miles of shoreline to a height sufficient to retard the influx of Gulf water during most storm and high tide events. The restored beach ridge will provide protection for approximately 30,000 acres of nationally significant wetlands within the McFaddin NWR and J.D. Murphree State Wildlife Management Area from the increasing frequency of salt water inundation from the Gulf of Mexico.
