McFaddin NWR Dune Stabilization Project

Project Description

This project protected the access road to the Papco oilfield. There is only one road into the oilfield and it runs immediately behind this project area. This project reestablished the dune system that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The dune system in this area protects the infrastructure of McFaddin NWR, which includes the shop and work area, the entrance road and a public restroom. Without the protection of the dunes, this area will be more vulnerable to storm surges and saltwater intrusion. This dune system also protects the public highway that runs to the beach and the refuge.
