Virginia Point Shoreline Protection & Habitat Restoration

Project Description

The primary purpose of this initial project phase is to complete an engineering and design alternatives analysis to develop the optimal design and configuration for placement of erosion control structures along the entire 10,000 feet of east shoreline at Virginia Point. Planting of emergent vegetation behind the protective structures will be considered to restore intertidal marsh. A second purpose is to study the possibility of diverting treated freshwater discharge from the Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority’s wastewater treatment facility adjacent to the Preserve to create a localized hydrologic regime suitable for the recruitment and growth of oysters within the confines of the engineered breakwater structures.
