Long before it joined the United States in 1845, Texas played an important role in American history. As early as the sixteenth century, European rivals sought to claim and control it in their quest to dominate the North American continent. Texas also played a pivotal role in key developments throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

To support Texas social studies teachers, the GLO offers an extensive selection of digital primary sources, lesson plans, and supplemental materials suitable for classroom use. It has an especially strong collection of maps showing European colonization of North America, westward expansion of the United States, railway development, and the U.S.-Mexico War and U.S. Civil War. Visit the Texas GLO Map Database and Store and GIS Educational Maps collection to locate suitable historical and GIS maps for your needs.

All lesson plans and educational materials are in line with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.
