Commissioner Dawn Buckingham and Texas GLO Celebrate 2,000th Home Rebuilt in Houston and Harris County
AUSTIN — Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., proudly announced the Texas General Land Office (GLO) has rebuilt more than 2,000 homes in Houston and Harris County through the Homeowner Assistance Programs (HAP). This accomplishment is part of the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and other disasters, underscoring the GLO's long-term commitment to restoring and rebuilding communities across Texas.
"We are proud to celebrate rebuilding more than 2,000 homes for families in Houston and Harris County," said Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. "This milestone represents more than just a number—it reflects the dedication and hard work of the GLO's disaster recovery team and our commitment to helping Texas families rebuild their lives after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and other disasters. We will continue to work tirelessly until all eligible applicants return to resilient homes that are safe and secure from the next storm."
Hurricane Harvey Homeowner Assistance Program
The GLO's Homeowner Assistance Program is funded by $2 billion in Community Development Block Grants for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program is designed to help homeowners impacted by Hurricane Harvey and other disasters repair, rebuild, and, in some cases, elevate their homes to mitigate future flood risks. The GLO has helped rebuild homes for more than 2,000 families in Houston and Harris County, with many more under construction or in the approval process.
Ongoing Commitment to Disaster Recovery
The GLO continues to manage one of the largest disaster recovery programs in the state's history, having rebuilt more than 8,000 homes across 49 counties designated eligible by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The GLO’s disaster recovery efforts include helping homeowners rebuild their lives, replacing affordable rental housing, and reinforcing infrastructure to strengthen community resilience against future disasters.
Commissioner Buckingham reaffirmed the agency's ongoing dedication to disaster recovery and preparedness as the GLO celebrates this significant achievement. "The GLO remains steadfast in supporting Texans as they rebuild and recover," said Buckingham. "Together, we will continue to work towards a more resilient Texas."
