AUSTIN — Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. was honored to speak at the Construction Kickoff of the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum in San Antonio, Texas. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, and Alamo Trust, Inc. Executive Director Dr. Kate Rogers delivered remarks along with Commissioner Buckingham.

"As Land Commissioner, it is an honor to be tasked with protecting and preserving the Shrine of Texas Liberty," said Commissioner Buckingham. "Beginning construction on the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum marks a significant milestone in the Alamo Plan. This comprehensive $550 million restoration plan seeks to conserve the Alamo's 300-year history and the memory of those who fearlessly fought for Texas' independence sheltered by its sacred walls. With more than 1.6 million people visiting the Alamo annually, I am dedicated to working with the City of San Antonio and the Alamo Trust, Inc. to ensure visitors from around the world and future generations will forever be able to experience and learn about the sacrifices made for liberty at this sacred site."

In June 2023, Commissioner Buckingham, who played an integral part in advocating for Alamo funding, was thrilled to celebrate the passage of a historic $400 million allocation for the Alamo Plan, which was included in the state's budget signed by Governor Greg Abbott and championed by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. This funding supports several construction projects, including the Alamo Plaza, Alamo church, and Cenotaph.

The Alamo Visitor Center and Museum will be a world-class facility dedicated to preserving the Alamo's 300-year history and sharing this core of Texas' cultural identity. Texans and visitors worldwide will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Alamo by exploring the museum's eight immersive galleries and experiencing a state-of-the-art 4D theater. This project is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The Alamo Plan has three pillars that make up its foundation of conservation. They are to preserve the 300-year-old Church and Long Barrack, recapture the original mission site and battlefield footprint, and create a world-class Visitor Center and Museum to tell the full history of the site.
