Commissioner Dawn Buckingham and Texas GLO Celebrate Ribbon Cutting of The Oleanders at Broadway Affordable Housing Development
AUSTIN — Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., proudly announced the ribbon cutting of The Oleanders at Broadway, the largest affordable housing development on Galveston Island, made possible through nearly $89 million in disaster recovery funds from the Texas General Land Office (GLO). This significant investment marks one of the final and largest projects funded through the Hurricane Ike recovery grant, representing a major milestone in Texas' ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen disaster-affected communities.
"The Oleanders at Broadway is not just a housing development—it is a testament to the resilience and strength of the people of Galveston," said Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. "This project reflects the GLO's commitment to helping communities recover from the devastation of Hurricane Ike and other natural disasters. With 348 affordable rental units, we are not only providing homes but building a brighter future for the families who are the economic backbone of this island."
Hurricane Ike Recovery and The Oleanders at Broadway
The Oleanders at Broadway is a $115 million, 348-unit affordable housing development, with nearly $89 million funded through the GLO’s Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The project is the largest housing development on Galveston Island, providing essential housing for low- to moderate-income residents and helping the community recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike.
Managed by the Galveston Housing Authority, The Oleanders at Broadway stands as a key achievement in the GLO’s efforts to create resilient, affordable housing solutions for Texas residents affected by natural disasters.
Ongoing Commitment to Disaster Recovery
The GLO continues to lead one of the largest disaster recovery programs in the state's history, managing over $14 billion in recovery and mitigation funds. These efforts include the rebuilding of homes, affordable rental housing, and infrastructure projects designed to protect against future disasters.
