Cmr. George P. Bush calls on Texans to plan for pet disaster preparedness

In observance of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day on May 11, today Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush is urging Texans to plan for the whole family, including pets, when preparing for severe weather.

“Hurricane Harvey devastated communities and left thousands of pets in need of rescue,” said Commissioner Bush . “When severe weather is in the forecast, make sure your pets are prepared by creating an emergency kit. Include items such as adoption information papers, collars and leashes, medicine, and pictures of you and your pet together. Remember, many temporary evacuation shelters don’t allow pets, so make sure you have a plan in place for your whole family.”

After Hurricane Harvey, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) partnered with Austin Pets Alive! to create a series of #PetPreparedness videos to remind Texans to take care of their furry friends. Texans can follow along on social media, watch the GLO’s preparedness video tips, and find resources for family and pet preparedness at www.recovery.texas.gov/preparedness and www.ready.gov/pets.
