Biographical Note
Garry Mauro was elected to four terms as the commissioner of the Texas General Land Office from 1983-1999. He is best remembered for his efforts to clean up the Texas Coastline, his endorsement of legislation that promoted city buses running on alternative fuels, and finally for his efforts to clean up Austin's Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake). He is remembered as an advocate for the poor and disadvantaged of Texas and finally for his efforts concerning the recycling of plastics. Scope and Content
The Collection has been arranged into three series:
Series I: Correspondence and Research 1981-1999. Correspondence between Commissioner Mauro and the following State of Texas departments and agencies: Agriculture Department, Antiquities Committee, Attorney General, Coastal and Moving Council, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Governor's Office, Economic Development Commission, Historical Commission, Texas House, Treasury Department, University of Texas, Texas Public Employees Association, U.S. Congress, Department of Water Resources, Water Commission, Adopt a Beach, Aquaculture, Interstate Oil Compact Division, Legislative Budget Board, Lt. Governor, Parks and Wildlife Department, Purchasing and General Services, Railroad Commission, Secretary of State, Texas Senate, Soil Conservation Service, Office of State and Federal Relations, State Auditor, Sunset Commission, State Purchasing and General Services, Supreme Court of Texas, Texas Energy and Natural Resources Advisory Committee, Texas A&M University and the Treasury Department.
Series II: Official Communication 1983-1998. Contains intra-agency administrative correspondence (memos), press releases, and video that make up the vast bulk of the Garry Mauro Papers. This series contains communication that is "official", giving it permanent/archival status according to State of Texas Records Retention policies.
Series III: Photographs and Slides 1983-1998. Contains photographs and graphics of public and political events. Slides and photographs of local prominent and national political figures and visual records of his efforts to clean up three geographical areas of Texas: The Gulf of Mexico, Coastal Texas, and Austin's Lady Bird Lake.
Series IV: Christmas cards the used images from GLO maps 1983-1996. Sent to Mauro's supporters in gratitude for their support of Mauro's environmental and political initiatives.
