Article 32 of Legislative Decree No. 272 passed on March 26, 1834 called for the appointment of two special land commissioners to issue land titles to settlers occupying lands in the area of Nacogdoches and San Augustine. George Smyth (1803-1866) was appointed to issue titles in the area of Nacogdoches.
