Shamrock Island Breakwater Lift Permitting and Design Project

Project Description

The current proposed project seeks preliminary design and regulatory coordination to raise the elevation of the 11 initial breakwaters that were constructed in 2006. Relative sea level trend in Corpus Christi is 5.48 mm/year (+/- 0.98 mm/yr) based on monthly mean sea level data from 1983-20221, well above the annual sea level rise average for the United States at 3 mm/year 2 Additionally, Nueces Bay/Corpus Christi region is experiencing significant (>3.0mm/yr) land subsidence rates in the Coastal Bend region. Water levels have been observed to continually overtop the original breakwater structures and during mean high tides or storm events, are completely submerged. In 2025, a Shamrock Island restoration project, funded by CEPRA 10, was completed. These 11 breakwaters are in direct line to the newly completed project and would provide a level of protection from erosion from high waves.
