The Texas General Land Office (GLO) has begun work on a debris removal project along the Bolivar Peninsula. The project will clear beaches of dozens of abandoned well stubs and pipelines, a 5.6 mile stretch of geotube that was dislodged after Hurricane Harvey, as well as other debris that pose a threat to public safety.

“The coast is one of our state’s most cherished natural resources, and the GLO is proud to help maintain it and ensure the public’s safety,” said  Land Commissioner George P. Bush.  “This debris removal project along a stretch of highly-visited beaches in Galveston will restore the natural beauty of the area while also making it a safer and more enjoyable place to visit. I thank our staff and partners for their collaboration on this project, and I look forward to its successful completion.”

The project is being led by Brizo Construction, LLC who was granted a notice to proceed by the GLO in early February. The debris removal will take place on public beaches on Bolivar Peninsula and High Island. In total, the project will take place over an approximately 15-mile-long stretch of partially submerged lands. The project area can be found here .

This project is funded by the GLO Surface Damage Account and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) debris removal grant for a total budget of $3,393,000.00. The project is expected to be completed by summer
