Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. is honored to join with her fellow Texans and as a nation on this Memorial Day to remember the lives lost in the name of liberty. Since the revolutionary War, more than one million men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our grateful nation, and on this day of remembrance, we mourn their tragic losses while also honoring their dignity.
"As Commissioner of The General Land Office, it is also my privilege to serve as Chairwoman of the Veterans Land Board where we work to ensure that Texas Veterans have access to all the benefits available to them," said Commissioner Buckingham. "While working tirelessly to serve our Veterans, we are also reminded of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation. We are the home of the free because of the brave, and we must never forget that the freedom we cherish has always come at a cost."

Memorial Day is a day of grief as well as an opportunity for us to celebrate these heroes and their families. We do this by attending parades in their honor, visiting Veterans’ cemeteries to decorate the headstones of the fallen, and spending time with our families in remembrance.
One of the most important ways we can show our profound gratitude is to share their stories. By making a commitment to keeping their memories alive, we can ensure that future generations will not forget their courage, determination, and the cost of freedom.
Texas Veterans who may be interested in learning more about the benefits that may be available to them can call 1–800–252–8387, email
