Texas Gulf Region Cooperative Weed Management Area: Controlling the Brazilian Peppertree, Phase II

Summary

The requested funds will build on the CMP-Cycle 22 grant CBBEP received to assist the Gulf Region Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA} with implementation of the “Public Lands Projects” section of their management plan.  The CWMA has currently chosen to focus their treatment and removal efforts on four “zones” within Port Aransas.  These areas have high concentrations of Brazilian peppertrees and are owned by CWMA partners (i.e., Nueces County, University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI)).  CBBEP recently awarded a contract that will result in the treatment and removal of Brazilian peppertrees on all of Zone 1 (Nueces County) and part of Zone 2 (UTMSI/Nueces County).

Another goal of the CWMA effort is to educate the community on the importance of the natural habitats within our ecosystem and promote stewardship of our resources.  Therefore, a small amount of funding is also being requested to support the purchase of supplies needed for community workdays and educational events.
