The Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo is named after M.S. “Mike” Ussery and Charles H. Roan.
Mike Ussery enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1951 and was honorably discharged as a Captain in December 1953. He continued to serve in the Active Reserves through June 1964. It was Ussery’s parents who inspired him to dedicate his life to Veterans by watching them dedicate themselves to the Veterans Administration. Ussery served in many organizations like the National Rifle Association, Rotary Club of Amarillo, Rotary International, Alzheimer’s Association and the USA Olympics. Ussery dedicated much of his time to Veteran organizations such as American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Sons of American Revolution and the Texas Veterans Land Board. Ussery is remembered for his dedication toward bettering the community, not just for Veterans, but for everyone. Ussery died on June 14, 2005.
Charles H. Roan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. Private First-Class Roan served in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific. During his time in the Corps, Roan landed on the Island of Peleliu, Palau Islands, where he was killed in action on September 18, 1944. In the face of certain death, Roan acted with selflessness and bravery and saved the lives of four men. His immeasurable valor reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Marine Corps. For his selfless heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman in July 1945. The Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home opened in 2007 and has 120 beds, of which 30 are designated to memory care.
