The Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso is named after Staff Sergeant Ambrosio Guillen who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Guillen served as Platoon Sergeant in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He officially enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1948.

He completed Sea School at the San Diego Marine Recruit Depot and later became a Battalion Recruit Training Instructor. Guillen trained to recruit honor platoons and was awarded the coveted Battalion Honor Platoon award when his recruit platoon was designated in the Honor Platoon of the organization. He received this award by molding his men into outstanding Marines.

While leading the defense of a Marine outpost against the assault of two Chinese Communist battalions, Guillen was mortally wounded in a vicious night attack. To the amazement of the platoon, he refused medical aid and continued to direct his men until the enemy was routed in confusion, he died a few hours later.

Guillen is remembered for his heroic leadership and for making the ultimate sacrifice. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courageous acts by Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home opened in 2005 and has 160 beds, of which 60 are designated to memory care.
