Alfredo Gonzalez

The Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen is named after Sergeant Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez. Gonzalez served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965 to 1968.

He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. In his second tour, Gonzalez served as a squad leader and platoon sergeant with the 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division.

During his second tour in Vietnam, Gonzalez was killed in combat in the initial phase of the Battle of Huế and because of his skilled leadership and heroic actions during this battle he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home opened in 2005 and has 160 beds, of which 60 are designated to memory care.
