The Texas General Land Office Archives and Records is a closed stacks research collection, not a library.

Our primary concerns are preserving our unique, one-of-a-kind materials and easy access for our patrons. Security and preservation procedures are in place to ensure that today's researchers have access to our materials, as well as researchers hundreds of years in the future.

Our materials do not circulate. Most of our archival holdings may be accessed through our website or in our Research Room. Some items may only be available digitally due to preservation concerns.

Out-of-town researchers are advised to call ahead or email to confirm materials that may be of interest. For detailed research, it is recommended that an appointment be made with research staff.

Scheduling a Tour or Class Visit?

A premier site for genealogical and historical exploration and research, the Land Office Archives and Records welcomes visitors interested in Texas history. Next door to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the GLO Archives and Records is a perfect stop for group tours and class visits. After all, these documents are the heritage of all Texans. With prior notice, GLO staff will have documents and maps of interest ready for you and your group or class.

Group tours should be requested at least one week in advance. Free and lasting about 90 minutes, tours are best experienced with at most 20 people, although larger groups can be accommodated with additional notice.

Onsite activities and tours are available for primary, secondary, and higher education students. Interested teachers should contact archives@glo.texas.gov to discuss the details of their proposed visit.
