Assess and Remediate Abandoned Coastal Sites Impacted by Oil and Gas Activities

Summary

The Railroad of Texas abated a potential radiation threat  to the state's coastal environment by excavating and removing contaminated material caused by a ruptured radioactive logging source at the abandoned Evans Well No. 1 facility in Chambers County. Work included removal and disposal of contaminated liquids, dry active waste, basic sediment and contaminated soil with concentrations of Am-241 greater than 6 picocuries per gram. Excavated areas were backfilled with clean fill soil and the site was returned to unrestricted use. This is phase 2 of this project.
