Assessment and Investigation of the Beach and Dune Conditions at South Padre Island

Summary

The City of South Padre Island will use Cycle 24 funds to complete a new study on the beach and dune conditions of SPI. The study will provide an updated analysis of the best management practices that should be considered given the current conditions of the SPI shoreline. The study will include extensive surveys and will use Lidar, topographic mapping, aerial photographs, beach profiling, and more to understand the current beach system and acquire insight into future beach changes. The recommendations from this study will be used to identify which beach types provide SPI with the best protection and update SPI's Chapter 22 in the Code of Ordinance. The study will also validate the height and width of the dune system to ensure sufficient storm surge and wave energy absorption.
