Galveston Seawall Emergency Beach Nourishment

Summary

This project included the design and construction of a beach nourishment project placing beach-quality sand on the gulf beach in front of the seawall from 10th to 61st street in the City of Galveston, due to erosion caused by Hurricane Ike.  The beach nourishment was also undertaken to protect the integrity of the seawall given the erosion impacts tot he structure by the hurricane.  The project was competed in March 2009, placing approximately 480,000 cubic yards of beach-quality standalone 2.38 miles of beach (36cy/ft) adjacent ot the galveston Seawall., thereby extending the width of the dry beach to between 70-80 feet.  Sources included sand dredged from a location adjacent ot the South Jetty of the Galveston-Houston sip channel while 1000,000 cubic yards originated from Apffel Park on the east end of the island.
