Packery Channel Nature Park Habitat and Access

Summary

The purpose of the project is to construct additional nature park amenities that will significantly enhance public access to coastal habitats, provide educational outreach components, and create, enhance, and expand important coastal barrier island wildlife through the creation of 1.5-acre woodland habitat and enhancement of freshwater wetland habitat. This project will utilize the knowledge base that was acquired during past monitoring and survey efforts.

Funds will be used to (1) improve shoreline access by extending the existing American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant elevated boardwalk; (2) install ADA-accessible kiosks and shaded bench structures and
interpretive signage along the boardwalk; (3) create 1.5 acres of critical coastal woodland habitat; (4) enhance 0.5 acres of freshwater wetlands by planting native trees and shrubs along the wetland edges and removal of invasive species; and (5) conduct woodland and wetland transplant monitoring. An important monitoring goal is to understand how migrants use the created woodlands and wetland habitat so other migratory bird fallout sites can be created, enhanced, or restored.
