South Padre Island CEMS Beach Stabilization Demonstration

Summary

This is a two-phase demonstration project whose objective is to test an experimental methodology for the stabilization of the gulf facing shoreline adjacent to a one-mile portion of the pedestrian beach  within the city limits of the City of South Padre Island and extending to the northern boundary of the Andy Bowie County Park.  The project contemplates the placement of low profile submerged erosion-textile groins perpendicular to the beach designed to slow erosion in the project area by retaining the sand in the littoral drift. Phase 1 will address data collection / analysis, modeling, engineering/design and permitting.  Phase 2 will address construction and commence of post-construction monitoring.
