TPWD Powderhorn State Park and WMA Final Design Project

Project Description

The proposed project is Phase 2 of CEPRA Project No. 1708 “Powderhorn Lake and Matagorda Bay Shoreline Conservation - Phase I” in Calhoun County and seeks to provide additional funding for the design of shoreline protection and marsh restoration. The project site covers 5.2 miles of the southwest Matagorda Bay shoreline and over 135 acres of estuarine wetlands lying within the TPWD Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area andPowderhorn State Park. The entire southwest Matagorda Bay shoreline, including the peninsula at the mouth of Powderhorn Lake, isidentified as experiencing critical erosion and in need of protection to save important resources. The goals of the project are to stabilize and protect the shoreline through offshore breakwaters and living shoreline components, conserve and restore estuarine marsh habitat using breakwaters and beneficial use of dredged material, and facilitate sustainable development and recreation on these public lands. Note: A living shoreline component to protect specific reaches of the Matagorda Bay shoreline and State Park infrastructure is being proposed through a separate CEPRA project application to streamline permitting and implementation timelines for that part of the project.
