"One of the great privileges of serving as Texas Land Commissioner is overseeing a variety of our state's veterans programs," Commissioner Bush states. "As a veteran of the Afghan campaign, I take this responsibility very seriously, which is why this year we've taken steps at the General Land Office to serve those who have served us. But honoring our veterans requires our community working together to show our military men and women, as well as their families, that we appreciate the sacrifices they made to protect our freedoms."

Commissioner Bush is currently the only veteran non-judicial statewide elected official in Texas. He served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Lincoln Hecht also served United States Navy and Texas Supreme Court Associate Justice Philip Wayne "Phil" Johnson served as a decorated pilot in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War earning several honors including the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
