Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush released the following statement announcing the restoration of three Corpus Christi beaches affected by Hurricane Harvey. The restoration projects are funded largely by grants from FEMA. Corpus Christi North Beach, Sylvan Beach, and Rockport Beach will all be repaired. FEMA resources have been allocated to fund 90% of the repairs on all three beaches.
“Hurricane Harvey caused unprecedented damage to our Texas beaches,” said
Commissioner Bush. “In total, over 22,000 cubic yards of sand was lost on these three beaches alone during the storm. I am grateful for FEMA’s financial assistance in repairing our beaches, helping to ensure our coast remains resilient as we work to rebuild our communities. The restoration of these beaches not only assures our coastal resiliency but restores recreation areas that thousands of Texans enjoy each year.”
The Corpus Christi North Beach will receive $404,253.90 for the restoration of the dry beach’s width and profile, with Sylvan Beach receiving $355,243.50, and Rockport Beach receiving $575,329.61. All three beaches will be restored back to their pre-disaster design and function. The GLO awaits responses from FEMA on four pending requests that would ultimately restore Bryan/Quintana Beach in Brazoria County, Indianola Beach in Calhoun County, Sargent Beach in Matagorda County, and Surfside Beach in Brazoria County.
