Yesterday,  Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush visited Manor Senior High School as part of his ‘Year of Education’ Initiative. Manor Senior High School has partnered with  Generation Citizen to further encourage an effective civics education for our students in Texas. As a part of the Generation Citizen program, Commissioner Bush shared his personal story and background, listened to presentations from the students' most recent research project, and spent time engaging in discussion with the students on how we can better serve our community and the accompanying challenges.

Founded in 2008, Generation Citizen is an organization motivated to ensure every student receives an effective action civics education, and partners with schools across the country to educate young leaders of the importance of civic education. The in-class programs offered by Generation Citizen asks students to choose an issue they care about, develop a focused, strategic plan to address the issue, and act and learn from their success and failures as they work through the process of civic engagement.

“A well-rounded education extends far beyond a basic curriculum,” said  Commissioner Bush. “It is critical for our students to leave high school with an understanding of civics and government. The lessons taught at Manor ISD through Generation Citizen are preparing the students of today for the future of tomorrow. In addition, students should leave high school with tangible skills for immediate employment following graduation. Manor’s efforts to ensure workforce readiness is remarkable.”

Earlier this year, Commissioner Bush dedicated 2019 to having a conversation with the future, engaging with students, teachers, and administrators across the state. As part of the 'Year of Education,' Commissioner Bush is traveling across the state and participating in 50 education events to promote education in all types of learning environments (public, charter, homeschool, private, rural, urban, suburban). As a former school teacher, Commissioner Bush understands first-hand the impact education has on our students. Previously, he has noted that it is not only important to support our Texas school districts but to also connect with them.
