Commissioner Buckingham Announces the Results of the 2023 Adopt-A-Beach Coastwide Spring Cleanup

Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. announced that more than 4,500 volunteers participated along with her during the 2023 Adopt-A-Beach Coastwide Spring Cleanup this past Saturday. During the one-day event, a total of 73,032 pounds of trash was removed from 22 unique sites that stretched all the way from Port Arthur to South Padre.
 
“One of our greatest responsibilities is the stewardship of our coastal lands and the habitats and ecosystems they support, said Commissioner Buckingham. “As Land Commissioner and former resident of Galveston Island, it was truly an honor to come together this past weekend with Texans and volunteers from around the country to do our part to care for these beautiful beaches. With over 73,000 pounds of trash removed from the coast in a single day, there can be no doubt that the General Land Office’s Adopt-A-Beach program will continue ensuring a better future for Texas beaches for generations to come.”

The next coastwide cleanup is scheduled for September 23, 2023. Those interested in volunteering can find more information at  TexasAdoptABeach.org and are encouraged to participate in a day filled with fun and giving back to coastal communities.

This year’s state sponsors included the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Valero, the Texas Coastal Management Program, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, Flint Hills Resources, Gulf Copper, Cheniere, Ocean Conservancy, Altos Planos Mijenta Tequila, and ATX Solar.

The Adopt-A-Beach program began in the fall of 1986, when 2,800 volunteers picked up 124 tons of trash.  Since then, more than 563,363 Texas Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have picked up nearly 10,000 tons of trash from Texas beaches. ###
