On Monday, April 10th at 2:00 p.m., the
Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery will conduct a World War II KIA/MIA Burial for U.S. Army Air Forces Second Lieutenant (2LT) Wayne Lou Dyer.
Born on September 28, 1921, 2LT Dyer entered into service during World War II, and was assigned to the 569th Bombardment Squadron, 390th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 13th Bombardment Wing, 3rd Air Division, and 8th Air Force. He was shot down by enemy fighters during a large bombing mission near Leipzig, Germany in May 1944. Evidence of remains were recovered from the crash site in 2012 and, through dental, anthropological and mitochondrial DNA analysis, 2LT Dyer was identified and accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in September 2022.
2LT Dyer received the Purple Heart Medal, the Air Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the U.S. Army Air Forces Navigator Wings Badge.
2LT Dyer's is expected to have multiple family members attend his burial. However, members of the Killeen community are encouraged to spread the word about this Veteran's return home and to attend this special ceremony.
2LT Dyer will receive military honors. His niece is expected to accept the United States flag on his behalf.
The Texas Veterans Land Board works with the local communities and fellow Veterans service organizations to ensure that NO Veteran is EVER left behind.
