AUSTIN, Texas— Today, Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is pleased to share that the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee's Majority Professional Staff Members Chris Thomas, Asher Allman, Bradley Plunkett, and Kelsey Baron as well as Minority Counsel Feye Fernandez visited the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery (TSVC) in Killeen on March 18, 2025.

The Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs has legislative jurisdiction over matters relating to Veterans compensation and Veterans generally, as well as matters relating to the vocational rehabilitation, education, medical care, civil relief, and civilian readjustment of Veterans.

"As VLB Chairwoman, I am honored to be able to preserve the legacies of our Veterans by ensuring they have a place to rest befitting their sacrifices in our beautifully maintained Texas State Veterans Cemeteries," said Commissioner Buckingham. "There is no greater act of service than pledging to fight for your country, and we must diligently serve our Veterans in return. I thank everyone who visited our Killeen cemetery from the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. Your work helps support Veterans here in Texas and across our country. I will continue working with leaders and Veterans' advocates at the federal, state and local levels to deliver results for Texas Veterans and their families."

At the Killeen TSVC, VLB Executive Secretary Tony Dale, Deputy Director of TSVCs John Kelly, and Central Texas SVC VLB On-Site Representative Doug Gault treated the group to a tour of the beautiful grounds and facilities. The visitors were impressed by the VLB and cemetery staff's high standard of care for the facility, its equipment, and Texas Veterans and their families.

TSVCs are built through a partnership between the State of Texas and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and are managed by the VLB. The VLB manages three other TSVCs in Corpus Christi, Mission, and Abilene and will open a fifth cemetery in Lubbock this year. Burial benefits at TSVCs are identical to those for VA National Cemeteries.
